About Everlast
Although the name Everlast is synonymous with boxing, the company actually started out as a swimwear manufacturer in the Bronx in 1910. The son of a tailor and an avid swimmer, 17-year-old Jacob Golomb grew dissatisfied with the flimsy swimsuits of the time, which barely lasted a season. In response, he began making suits that he guaranteed would last for a full year. He proudly gave them the name "Everlast," and although the swimsuits did not last throughout history, the name did. In subsequent years, Golomb transformed his company into a small retail store that carried a full line of sports equipment. In 1917, a young fighter named Jack Dempsey introduced boxing to Golomb and Everlast. Dempsey asked Golomb to construct protective headgear that would last more that 15 rounds of intensive boxing training. In 1919, Dempsey won the world heavyweight championship wearing boxing gloves made for him by Golomb, and shortly afterward, Everlast became the boxing equipment headquarters throughout the world. Dedicated to leveraging the unique qualities represented by the Everlast brand--strength, dedication, individuality, and authenticity--the Everlast brand is now present in more than 101 countries and has 88 licenses worldwide.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent pair, February 27, 2006
First I want to make a slight correction to the previous reviewer's text: the size/weight of the gloves doesn't change according to the size of your hand but, rather, to the size of you, the user of the gloves. If you are an average sized male you will be hard pressed to find a sparring partner if you only have 10oz gloves: nobody in their right minds would agree to spar with you because with such small gloves the risk of injuring the receiver of the blows goes way up. Hence 16oz is the standard size for sparring gloves. Women can use 14oz and children 14oz and 12oz depending on how big they are. The point with heavier/bigger gloves is to protect your training partner.

Anyway, on with the review: these are good, all-around sparring gloves. Their over-all quality is quite good and even the velcros are done well so you could use these for thai boxing as well without scratching your partner's neck and shoulders when clinching. However, I found that when you put more power... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent Aerobics Glove, March 28, 2007

(REAL NAME)
The Everlast 2214 Pro Style Training Gloves come in 3 different weight sizes: 12, 14, and 16 oz and 4 colors: blue, red, black, and pink. Everlast advertises this glove as its "High Performance Hook-and-Loop Training Glove" with "dense two-layer sandwich foam for better shock absorbency." This is the Everlast glove that is stocked in department/sporting goods stores throughout the Chicagoland area and typically costs $29.99.

This review is based on the 14 oz. version of this glove. My guess is that this review applies to the 2214 glove in all of its weight variations (12 oz - 16 oz).

The exterior of the glove is vinyl. The vinyl exterior reduces the cost of the glove but decreases its longevity compared to leather gloves. The fit is snug to a bit cramped. The hook-and-loop fastener makes it easy to secure and undo. I prefer this type of hook-and-loop closure to the type found on certain training gloves offered by Title and Ringside which have an additional... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice gloves for heavy bags training, February 2, 2007

This review is from: Everlast Pro Style Training Gloves (Sports)
Very nice protection for heavy bags training. Nice grip also. There is one thing I have to say though - these gloves tend to run small, I mean, my hands are medium amongst Americans and I had to squeeze them into these gloves every time. I don't know what would happen to those who have bigger hands.

Complete Krav Maga: The Ultimate Guide to Over 230 Self-Defense and Combative Techniques

Product Description

Developed for the Israel military forces and battle tested in real-life combat, Krav Maga has gained an international reputation as an easy-to-learn yet highly effective art of self-defense. Clearly written and extensively illustrated, Complete Krav Maga details every aspect of the system including dozens of hand-to-hand combat moves, over 20 weapons defense techniques and a complete physical conditioning workout program.

All the moves are described in depth from beginning Yellow Belt to advanced Black Belt, yet they are easy to learn because one of Krav Maga's strengths is its simplicity. Based on the principle that it is best to move from defense to attack as quickly as possible, Complete Krav Maga offers fast-escape maneuvers from attacks and holds. It then follows them up with specific counterattacks, including punches, kicks and throws.

The authors show how anyone (big or small, man or woman) can practice self defense by using Krav Maga to protect weak spots, exploit an assailant's vulnerabilities and turn the attacker s force against him. Complete Krav Maga teaches the reader how to get in shape, gain confidence and feel safer and more secure every day.

I was able to get a copy of this book last weekend and WOW, it's even more detailed than I thought. I have been involved in the Martial Arts for 30 years now (since I was a kid) and I must say that not only is this book easy to follow and learn from, it includes great "Tips" for training and I must say is factually and pictorially on-the-money accurate!

For a comprehensive guide, it's laid out easily for the beginner to follow through from start to finish. DON'T try to skip through to higher level techniques, the text refers to lower level stuff that you need to know before trying the harder ones...just like Krav Maga is taught on the training floor.

I have a deep understanding of Krav Maga as I've been training in it for the last 10 years, and this book lays out the techniques exactly as they should be done. The pictures are taken from great angles too and show really good progressions. Thank you Darren and John and Krav Maga Worldwide for putting this book... Read more

This review is from: Complete Krav Maga: The Ultimate Guide to Over 230 Self-Defense and Combative Techniques (Paperback)
    This book is amazing.
You will see that a lot of thought and work went into making this book. The self-defense techniques are grouped by belt levels in a graduated learning approach.

This book is about self-defense techniques (not so much about street, war or sport fighting). The emphasis is on defend, counter, and escape.

Each of the techniques are described in detail and illustrated with 3 to 5 pictures. This book is so well written and illustrated that it is like a text book for a class.

I highly recommend getting this book if you are interested in self-defense.

With hundreds of excellent photographs, COMPLETE KRAV MAGA provides readers with clear explanations of Krav Maga techniques. I teach Krav, and have already made regular use of this book as a handy reference. For the 12 years I've trained in Krav, I've hoped for a book just like this to come out. John Whitman and Darren Levine have done a terrific job in organizing and presenting a wide range of material in a format that is both user-friendly and in-depth.

Overcoming Gravity: A Systematic Approach to Gymnastics and Bodyweight Strength

    Product Description

Overcoming Gravity: A Systematic Approach to Gymnastics and Bodyweight Strength is a 542 page comprehensive guide to the most overlooked, yet most powerful elements of strength training.

In this book, Steven Low takes the reader on a journey through logically and systematically constructing a strength oriented bodyweight workout routine. With a highly systematic and scientific approach, Steven delves into the exercise physiology behind strength training and how to adequately prepare the body for the rigors of bodyweight training. Using the same rigor and attention to detail, Overcoming Gravity also includes recommendations for all bodyweight athletes concerning health and injury management. Unlike other books on this topic, it provides extremely comprehensive sample programming to assist in the design of a well-balanced routine, including information about the proper execution of the exercises and techniques.

If you prefer your books on fitness and health to include data, science and effective recommendations, then Overcoming Gravity is an ideal addition to your library.

Note: this book contains no bodyweight leg exercises, or primary gymnastics work (cartwheels, tumbling, swings, giants, etc.). It is devoted solely toward upper body strength and skill development with gymnastics exercises.

"I'll say it straight: Overcoming Gravity is the best book money can buy on gymnastics and bodyweight strength--period! This book reads like what it is--an absolute labor of love, an all-encompassing masterpiece written by a bona fide genius in the field. This book wasn't written to make a ton of money. There is so much advanced training information in this huge volume that it could have easily been watered-down and split into ten books...maybe more. Overcoming Gravity has the power to change the way you train--not just for a handful of workouts, but for an entire lifetime. Buy this book!"
---Paul "Coach" Wade, best-selling Dragon Door author of Convict Conditioning and Convict Conditioning 2

This review is from: Overcoming Gravity: A Systematic Approach to Gymnastics and Bodyweight Strength (Paperback)
If you're reading this I guess is because you have an interest in bodyweight training, at the moment this is the one stop book on upper body strength training, period.

Though, bare in mind it's not everything bodyweight, it focuses solely on upper body strength development in a gymnast's way, it's not a gymnastic skills manual (no cartwheels, swings, shoulder inlocates and the likes) it's not about conditioning, it's not about GPP (general physical preparedness), it's not about plyometrics or anything else. Now, don't get me wrong, this book is for EVERYONE, it teaches you how to develop ridiculous amounts of strength, all the way to iron cross, planche and more. You decide how far to go in your journey, it provides you the knowledge for such amazing goals.

The fact the author has personally answered all questions on [...] forum shows you how he keeps his feet on the ground. There's no hype. He doesn't try to sell you anything, he's just so passionate about... Read more

This review is from: Overcoming Gravity: A Systematic Approach to Gymnastics and Bodyweight Strength (Paperback)
Overcoming Gravity is a veritable compendium of information on how to improve in bodyweight strength and mobility from the level of complete novice through expert. Mr. Low is well versed in the fields of exercise science and kinesiology, and he applies this knowledge towards a greater understanding of the process of bodyweight exercise. This book will give you a solid foundation on how to build your own gymnastic or bodyweight strength routine: How many days a week to train, which exercises to choose, how to do those exercises, how many reps, how many sets, etc. The book also contains impressive chapters on common injuries, how to rehabilitate, and how to prevent in the first place. Mr Low might not be the coach of national champion athletes, but he has a deep understanding of the subject and the knowledge and language to explain the how and why of it all to the layperson. I highly recommend this book to any person looking to advance in bodyweight exercise strength and skills.

This review is from: Overcoming Gravity: A Systematic Approach to Gymnastics and Bodyweight Strength (Paperback)
I have been a long time follower of Steven Low's blog www.eatmoveimprove.com and an avid student of gymnastics and bodyweight training. My favorite thing about the book is the progressions. Often times I find that many other authors have progressions that are too fast or difficult to follow. But in Overcoming Gravity, the progressions are in much smaller steps which allows for the reader to pick up at his or her ability easily and immediately begin developing their strength. This book does not require that you must already have a foundation in gymnastics or bodyweight training which makes it a fantastic resource for beginners, but beyond that, it's also an amazing resource for even advanced gymnasts as the progressions continue on to even the most demanding movements like inverted crosses or elevators.

Overall, it is a plethora of information, almost too much information to retain from a single reading. But that shouldn't stop you from using it as a reference tool. If... Read more
